What is genetic counselling?
Genetic counsellors assist individuals, couples and families to understand complex genetic information and its consequences for themselves and their future children.
Our genetic counsellors provide education and psychosocial support to enhance understanding, decision making and coping with genetic risks. We discuss all available options with utmost confidentiality and respect of our patient’s values and beliefs.
We provide information about genetic tests and related procedures and make relevant referrals, where appropriate.
Our staff also serve as a central resource of information about genetic conditions for patients and other healthcare providers.
“Genetic counselling is a communication process, which aims to help individuals, couples and families understand and adapt to the medical, psychological, familial and reproductive implications of the genetic contribution to specific health conditions.” (Resta et al, 2006) 1.
